Why Brainhack ?

BrainHacks are collaborative events that focus on the open sharing of ideas, models, code, and data. They bring together brain experts and enthusiasts from a variety of backgrounds to build relationships, learn from one another, and collaborate on projects related to the neurosciences.

BrainHack Global Toronto 2022 is part of BrainHack Global 2022. This year, BrainHack Global Toronto will be fully hybrid. Participants at BrainHack Global Toronto 2022 will have opportunities to work with like-minded scientists through either submitting an organized project or engaging in one.

We also encourage new programmers and students/scientists to participate in our workshop this year. We pair with Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatic (KCNI) at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to provide learning opportunities through the annual one-week KCNI/SCWG Workshops (Nov 28th - Dec 2nd) to help kickstart your growth as a neurohacker!

Join us on Discord to join the community of BrainHack Global Toronto 2022 and start planning your projects! We also have an official #brainhack-toronto channel on Mattermost, where you can connect with the BrainHack Global community around the world!

Program

This two day event will bring together local scientists and trainees in neuroimaging from institutions across the region. The program will include:

  • Open hacking sessions in which attendees will work together on projects of their own design. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring their own projects into the hackathon to work collaboratively with others. Project inspirations could stem from other projects proposed by attendees, ongoing work you're involved in, or new research areas that you've been waiting to have an opportunity to jump on!
  • KCNI-SCWG Annual Workshops to help you get up to speed with various programming languages and current practices in open-source and reproducible neuroimaging analysis.
  • Panel and Lunch-time Discussions are social events focusing on open chatter on topics that are not research specific. This year, the panel will focus on "Where do the BrainHackers go? Somewhere between academia and industry." for which we invite previous brainhackers to share their career trajectories that are neither academia nor fully in industry.
  • Socials will be held during hack nights to foster community building.

Workshops

BrainHack Global Toronto 2022 will work with the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatic (KCNI) at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and feature a series of workshops hosted over one week (Nov 28th - Dec 2nd) in order to enhance the computational literacy of neuroscientists across all levels. Free registration (with insitutional e-mail) for each session is available on this website. Please see below for the complete list and the instructors of each session. The workshops will be fully hybrid mainly via WebEx client with in person session at the KCNI.

The goal if this workshop series is to provide training that is often often not part of the core curriculum for biomedical/medical science degrees in the era when our research has become increasingly more computationally-driven. KCNI, in collaboration with the Scientific Computing Workshops at CAMH are focused on building computing skills and fundamentals to help organize study data, automate repeatable/reproducible analyses, and make use of CAMH computing resources to save time.
