Why Brainhack ?

BrainHacks are collaborative events that focus on the open sharing of ideas, models, code, and data. They bring together brain experts and enthusiasts from a variety of backgrounds to build relationships, learn from one another, and collaborate on projects related to the neurosciences.

BrainHack Global Toronto 2021 is part of BrainHack Global 2021. Participants at BrainHack Global Toronto 2021 will have opportunities to work with like-minded scientists through either submitting an organized project or engaging in one. We also encourage new programmers and students/scientists to participate, we will provide learning opportunities through our Day 1 Workshops to help kickstart your growth as a neurohacker!

Join us on Discord to join the community of BrainHack Global Toronto 2021 and start planning your projects! We also have an official #brainhack-toronto channel on Mattermost, where you can connect with the BrainHack Global community around the world!

Dates: Dec 08-10, 2021
Cost: FREE
Location: The event will be in hybrid mode including hacking sessions on Hopin and few virtual and outdoor in-person socials.
Note: We follow the code of conduct of BrainHack Global.

Program

This three day event will bring together local scientists and trainees in neuroimaging from institutions across the region. The program will include:

  • Open hacking sessions in which attendees will work together on projects of their own design. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring their own projects into the hackathon to work collaboratively with others. Project inspirations could stem from other projects proposed by attendees, ongoing work you're involved in, or new research areas that you've been waiting to have an opportunity to jump on!
  • Computing Workshops to help you get up to speed with current practices in open-source and reproducible neuroimaging analysis using Python.
  • Unconference Talks that discusses interesting topics in research and lives as researchers. This year, we will share with you:
    • Future data integration approach for clinical studies at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
    • Scintific findings about mindfulness along with a practice session
  • Panel and Lunch-time Discussions are social events focusing on open chatter on topics that are not research specific. There will be discussions on topics including:
    • Fun and challenges in analyzing MRI data
    • Industry Opportunities outside of Academia
  • Virtual Socials will be held during hack nights to foster community building.

Workshops

BrainHack Global Toronto 2021 will feature Day 1 workshops in order to enhance the computational literacy of neuroscientists across all levels. This year will feature a series of workshops to both promote collaborative programming practices and neuroimaging expertise within the community. Workshops include:

1. Collaborating using Git/Github

  • An intermediate take on the use of the ever-essential Git/Github software tools. Attendees will learn how to implement best-practices Git repository organization as well as common conventions used when contributing to open-source projects.

2. Python Programming Crash Course and Data Visualization

  • Attendees will learn of the tools and practices used in building visualization.

3. MRI basics

  • Attendees will learn of common features that are used in the analysis of MRI data.

4. BIDS-apps

  • The BIDS standard is rapidly becoming common practice in the neuroimaging community. Here participants will learn how the BIDS standard enables the development and applicability of various data processing pipelines (BIDS-apps). In addition, they will gain hands-on experience using these pipelines on data adhering to the BIDS standard.

Unconference Talks

A new era of clinical cohort studies at CAMH and beyond: design, purpose, and opportunities for data integration

panelist-box
  • Join us for a unique session, where Dr. Dan Felsky introduces two cross-disciplinary cohort studies recently launched at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and discusses current and future opportunities for data integration across biological, clinical, and social data types.

Mindfulness - from research to practice

panelist-box
  • Join us for a unique session, where Dr. Norman Farb will share some mindfulness neuroimaging findings then guide a mindfulness meditation.

Panels

BrainHack Global Toronto 2021 will feature two panel discussions that discuss two important aspects of live as a scientist. These discussions are spread out across the first and the last days of the event:

Fun and challenges in analyzing MRI data (Day 1)
